Asynchronous motors are often started directly or with a star-delta connection. With direct starting, extremely high starting currents of up to seven times the rated motor current occur. The star-delta connection alleviates the problem with a root-3 lower phase voltage. However, switching from star to delta also results in a considerable current peak. These types of start can overload the grid, interfere with other loads, cause mechanical problems and expose the entire drive to high wear and tear.
The solution to these problems is a soft starter. During start-up, the starter reduces the voltage in two of the three phases by phase control. During the adjustable start-up time, the torque increases slowly until the full mains voltage is applied to the motor. This results in a smooth start-up of your drive that is gentle on the mains and drive.
The PSR series includes the most compact soft starters and thus enables the design of compact starting devices. The system concept with motor-protective circuit-breakers and the products in the PSR series provides a much more compact starting solution than a star-delta starter, for example.
Integrated bypass contactors reduce energy losses and simplify the connection; set-up is child's play thanks to the limitation to just three potentiometers. The optimised ramp characteristics nevertheless ensure very smooth starting and stopping under all operating conditions.
